Neck lift recovery

Patrick K. Sullivan

Recovering from a neck lift can take between two to four weeks, though the full healing process can continue for a few months.

Most patients can return to their daily routines after about two weeks, with minor residual swelling or tightness that gradually subsides over time. During the initial days, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling, but these side effects will diminish significantly within the first two weeks.

What to expect during the recovery time

Here’s a brief timeline of what to expect during neck lift recovery:

  • Day 1-3: Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are most noticeable. Keeping the head elevated and wearing any prescribed compression garment can help ease these symptoms.
  • Day 4-7: Swelling and bruising start to reduce, and discomfort lessens. Light daily activities can be resumed.
  • Week 2: Bruising and swelling continue to decrease. Most patients feel well enough to return to work, though some residual tightness and minor swelling may persist.
  • Month 1-3: By this stage, most visible swelling and tightness have resolved, and the full results of the neck lift become more apparent.
  • Month 6+: Full healing and final results, with the neck area looking smoother, firmer, and more youthful

4 tips for a quick recovery after neck lift

1. Follow your surgeon’s post-surgical instructions

Your surgeon’s guidance is tailored to your individual needs, ensuring you heal well and achieve the best results. Adhering to all aftercare instructions, such as keeping the area clean and taking prescribed medications, is key for a smooth recovery.

2. Keep your head elevated

Keeping your head elevated, especially in the first few days, helps reduce swelling and promotes healthy circulation. Using extra pillows or a recliner can help maintain this position comfortably.

3. Avoid strenuous activities

Strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four weeks post-surgery. This helps prevent strain on the neck area and minimises the risk of complications.

4. Wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing

Opt for loose clothing that can be put on and taken off without pulling over your head. Button-down shirts or tops with zips help avoid unnecessary strain on the neck.

Swelling during the recovery period

Swelling is a normal part of the healing process and tends to be most noticeable in the first week post-surgery. As the body heals, the swelling subsides. Most swelling resolves within two to four weeks, but minor residual swelling can persist for a few months. Following your surgeon’s recommendations, such as wearing compression garments, can help manage swelling effectively.

How long does neck tightness last post-surgery?

Neck tightness is common after a neck lift and results from the tightening of muscles and skin. This sensation starts to lessen within the first few weeks, though some patients may feel mild tightness for a few months as the area continues to heal and adjust. Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon will help monitor this and address any concerns during recovery.
