What is antibiotic ointment?

Antibiotic ointment is a medicine that is absorbed through the skin and treats/prevents infection. It is often used on minor wounds, cuts and surgical sites to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of bacterial infection. The ointments are available both over the counter and on prescription, and they are an important part of aftercare following surgery.

Cold therapy

Another tip is to cool the surgical area, as this helps to reduce swelling and discomfort. Cold therapy constricts the blood vessels, reduces the blood flow to the area and thereby reduces inflammation and pain.

You should apply ice to the surgical area at regular intervals during the first 48 hours after surgery. This means cooling the area for 10–15 minutes every hour while you are awake.
