What to think about before and after Botox

Before and after Botox

What to think about before Botox

With the right preparation you give your body the best conditions to take up the effects of Botox. Here is what to think about before Botox.

  • You should be in good health
  • Make sure you have had enough to drink
  • Hold off if you have an ongoing infection, a fever or a general feeling of being unwell
  • Hold off if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You should not have an ongoing herpes or impetigo infection at the injection site
  • You should not smoke for at least one week before treatment
  • No active acne at the injection site
  • Stay away from wine and garlic in the days before treatment
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medicines (such as Treo, ibuprofen and certain herbal supplements, for at least 10-14 days before treatment)
  • Avoid other skin treatments such as facials, chemical peels or microdermabrasion for at least one week before your booked treatment

If you are having a Botox treatment ahead of a particular event, the recommendation is to book your treatment at least two weeks in advance, to be sure that any swelling or bruising has time to settle and that the treatment reaches its full effect.

What to think about after Botox

After your treatment you can minimise the risk of side effects by following the advice below. Here are the important things to think about after Botox, during the first few days after treatment.

  • Avoid intense sun, saunas, steam baths and severe cold for the first 24 hours
  • Avoid make-up on the treated area for at least 12 hours
  • Wait 24 hours before drinking alcohol after Botox
  • Skip hard physical exercise during the first 24 hours
  • Avoid massaging or touching the injected area
  • Facial treatments with wax, peels, microneedling, IPL or laser should be postponed for at least 24 hours
  • If needed, Hirudoid cream can be used to speed up the healing of any bruising
  • Wait 24 hours before flying after Botox
  • Make sure you sleep on your back after Botox – it may be fine to sleep on your side as well

Most people can return to work and other everyday activities straight after Botox. It is common to experience slight swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising at the injection site, but this is usually temporary and disappears within a few days.
