How long does healing take after blepharoplasty?

Timeline of the healing process

After eyelid surgery comes a healing process that extends over several months. Here is what you can expect.

The first few days

During the first few days after surgery you may experience swelling, bruising and some pain. It is important to rest and to follow your surgeon's aftercare instructions. Use cold compresses to reduce the swelling and keep your head elevated as much as possible.

4 weeks after

After four weeks most of the swelling and bruising should have subsided, and you will start to see improvements in the appearance of your eyelids. You may still have a little swelling, but it will continue to reduce. You can resume your normal everyday activities, but it is important to keep following any restrictions or guidelines from your surgeon.

6 months after

Six months after the procedure you can usually see the final result, and the healing after your blepharoplasty is complete. By this point all the swelling should have gone, and the incision lines will have faded considerably. Your eyelids will have settled into their new contour, and you should be able to make out a more rested and youthful appearance.
