When can you drive after breast augmentation?

Why you should wait before driving after breast surgery:

• Avoid external strain: For your breasts to heal without complications, you need to follow your surgeon's advice carefully after your breast augmentation. If you start driving too soon, it can put external strain on your body, which also affects your recovery.
• Impaired driving ability: With painkillers in your system, your ability to drive can also be impaired, which is a risk to both yourself and other road users. Even if you feel fine physically, you should never drive after breast surgery for as long as you are taking strong medication.
• Limited mobility: During recovery you may experience pain, swelling and limited mobility, which makes it uncomfortable and unsafe to drive after breast surgery. Sudden movements or the need to react quickly can be a challenge during the healing process.

Plan for the time after the operation

• Arrange a lift home: You must not drive yourself home after the operation, as you will have fresh wounds, pain and the effects of medication and general anaesthetic. Make sure to arrange for someone to drive you home. Ask friends and family for help or book a taxi.
• Avoid exercise: Do not take part in activities such as running, swimming or heavy lifting for at least two weeks after the operation. Exercise and physical activity can put strain on your incisions and delay the healing.‍
• Consult your doctor: After 2–4 weeks you can usually start driving again after your breast surgery/breast augmentation, but only if your surgeon approves it. Your surgeon will give you personalised advice based on how far you have come in the recovery process.
