How long does a BBL last?

Permanent results
On average, around 60–80% of the transplanted fat survives and becomes a permanent part of the body. The survival of the fat cells depends partly on the technique the surgeon used during the transfer, and partly on how well the patient has followed the aftercare instructions. The patient's metabolism can also affect how large a proportion of the transferred fat survives.
The final result of a BBL is visible once about 3–6 months have passed since the surgery, when any swelling has settled and the body is beginning to finish healing.

A BBL lasts longer with a healthy lifestyle
Even though the surviving fat cells become a permanent part of the body, you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to preserve the results of a Brazilian Butt Lift. That includes keeping a balanced diet combined with regular exercise.

A balanced diet
Focus on nutritious foods that are good for your general health and that make it easier to keep a stable weight and to avoid either weight gain or weight loss affecting your body's new contours. Some guidelines to follow are:
- Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables.
- Include lean protein for better tissue repair and to keep the fat cells healthy.
- Avoid excessive intake of sugar, processed foods and unhealthy fats.
Exercise regularly
With the help of regular exercise you can both preserve the firmness and new shape of your buttocks and tone your body further. After your BBL surgery you should be careful about how much and how quickly you start exercising. If you start exercising too early, there is a risk that the transferred fat will not survive.
- Avoid strenuous activities for at least 6–8 weeks to give your body time to heal.
- Start with low-intensity exercise, such as walking.
- Introduce strength training focused on the gluteal muscles gradually (for example squats and lunges).
- Always consult your surgeon before you start exercising fully.
Keep a stable weight
If you gain or lose a lot of weight, it can change the size and shape of your buttocks, even after a BBL – the transferred fat cells behave like other fat cells in the body and are affected by weight changes in the same way as other parts of the body. To maintain a stable weight, you can:
- Keep a healthy lifestyle.
- Stick to consistent eating and exercise habits.
- Avoid so-called crash diets or rapid weight changes.
When it comes to keeping a stable weight, consistency is the key word.
Stop smoking
Smoking has a negative effect on blood circulation, which in turn can reduce the transferred fat cells' chance of survival. If you smoke, you should stop well before surgery and stay smoke-free throughout the recovery period – it increases the chances of a successful and long-lasting result from your BBL.
Natural ageing
Despite all your efforts, it is impossible to escape natural ageing. Over time you may see the following changes affecting the result of your Brazilian Butt Lift:
- The skin can lose its elasticity and become slightly saggy.
- The distribution of fat can change as a result of hormonal changes in the body.
- The buttocks can become somewhat flatter as the muscles lose some of their tone at rest.
Although this cannot be avoided entirely, a healthy lifestyle can delay the onset of these bodily changes and preserve the results of the surgery over time.
