How old do you have to be to have a labiaplasty?

The person being operated on also needs to be able to give their consent and to understand what the procedure really involves – both physically and mentally. Although maturity can vary, it is always the age limit of 18 that applies under Swedish law. A reputable surgeon always assesses the patient's reasons, expectations and medical circumstances before surgery becomes an option.
Different stages of life
The teenage years
Surgeons almost always advise against procedures before the age of 18, except in very particular cases, for example where there is clear asymmetry causing physical problems. Even then, other solutions should have been tried first, and the patient should have received support and counselling.
Under Swedish law, a labiaplasty may only be performed on people who have turned 18. Social norms and incorrect information – particularly online – can influence young people's picture of what is “normal”, and so some young people can feel unsure about how their labia look.
Often the worry is about entirely normal variations or temporary phases of development.
Young women (18+)
For women in their late teens and twenties it is most often about discomfort during physical activity, clothing that chafes or insecurity in connection with intimacy.
The decision to have surgery should be taken on your own terms, without outside influence. A reputable clinic carries out a thorough review of the patient's health, body image and expectations of the result. It is not unusual to believe that surgery will solve deeper problems, which makes conversations about motivation especially important.

During and after pregnancy
Pregnancy and childbirth can create permanent changes in the genital area, for example through stretching, tearing or looser tissue. This can cause discomfort during everyday activities or affect your own self-esteem.
Some people want to have surgery shortly after giving birth, but it is recommended to wait at least 6 to 12 months – both so that the body can heal and to avoid another baby affecting the result. For anyone planning more pregnancies it may be wise to wait.
Older women (40+)
With age, the body's collagen production decreases, which can lead to thinner skin, looser tissue and poorer elasticity. Some experience irritation or hygiene problems, others simply want to feel more comfortable.
At this age it is particularly important to take overall health into account. Age in itself is not an obstacle, but the ability to heal, blood circulation and any medication are weighed up in the assessment.
Things to consider before you decide
Undergoing a labiaplasty is a highly personal decision that requires you to have a good understanding of what the procedure involves – not just physically, but emotionally too. Here are a few things to think about:
- The healing process
Most people need to reckon on around two weeks of rest at the start, with swelling, tenderness and limited mobility. Full recovery can take several months. - Risks and complications
Serious complications after a labiaplasty are uncommon, but can occur even with experienced surgeons. They can involve, for example, infection, prolonged pain, asymmetry, reduced sensation or the result not matching expectations. Understanding these risks is a large part of making a well-informed decision. - Your motivation
Are you doing this for yourself, or to live up to someone else's picture of how you “ought” to look? Do you think your quality of life will improve, or are you being influenced by a partner, the media or social norms? Surgery can bring greater confidence – but it should not replace therapy or work on your self-esteem. - Long-term effects
The procedure does not affect your fertility, but it can change sensation in the area. Most people are satisfied afterwards, but it is worth knowing that scarring and altered sensation can occur. - The right clinic
Choose a clinic that takes the time to understand you. The consultation should not feel rushed or “salesy” in the way it is carried out. You should be able to ask questions, say no or take plenty of time to think.
