How do you relieve muscle cramp after breast augmentation?

How to help muscle relax after breast augmentation

Tips for reducing cramp and muscle tension

Muscle relaxation is the key to minimising discomfort and letting your body recover properly. Below are some effective tips that help you relax the chest muscles after a breast augmentation.

1. Gentle movement and stretching

Rotate your arms slowly in small circles to wake up and stretch the chest muscles without putting too much strain on the area.

  • Stretch against a wall: Stand facing a wall, stretch one arm out against the wall and gently stretch the chest by turning your body away from the wall. Repeat on the other side.
  • Stretch in a doorway: Stand in a doorway with your arms stretched out at shoulder height and press your palms against the door frame. Step gently forward to feel a stretch across the chest.

The exercises should be introduced gradually and only after approval from your surgeon. Gentle stretching helps increase blood circulation, which can relieve tension and help during the healing process. Do not overdo it and make sure to stop at stretching – introducing too much movement early or overstretching the muscles can disturb the healing.

2. Heat therapy

Use a warm compress, a wheat bag or a hot water bottle for 15–20 minutes at a time to get the blood circulation going.

Note that in some cases it can be unsuitable to use heat too soon after the operation. Wait until the initial swelling has settled and you have been given the go-ahead by your surgeon.

3. Hydration and nutrition

The muscles recover better if you keep to a well-balanced diet and keep your body hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and reduce soreness, cramp and stiffness. A diet rich in vitamins, minerals and protein also supports tissue repair and recovery.

Foods that contain a lot of antioxidants (e.g. berries, leafy greens and nuts) and omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. salmon and linseed) can help reduce inflammation, while protein-rich foods contribute to muscle repair.

4. Medication and pain relief

Follow your surgeon's instructions on taking prescribed medicines such as muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory drugs. Discuss any side effects with your doctor before you start taking medication.
