Neck lift recovery, day by day

What can you expect during the healing?
Here is a brief overview of what usually happens during the healing after a neck lift:
- Days 1–3: Swelling, bruising and mild discomfort will most likely be felt. Keeping your head in a raised position and wearing a compression garment as instructed helps the body to recover.
- Days 4–7: The swelling decreases and the bruising begins to fade. The discomfort subsides and lighter everyday activities can be resumed.
- Week 2: Further improvement is noticeable. Most people feel ready to go back to work, although some tightness or swelling may linger.
- Months 1–3: Most visible signs of swelling and tightness have gone. The result of the neck lift starts to become more apparent.
- Month 6 onwards: Final healing is achieved. The skin looks firmer and smoother, and the neck area gives a younger impression.
4 tips for a smooth recovery after a neck lift
For the best possible healing, always follow your surgeon's instructions and avoid any activity that has a negative effect on the result and the healing.

1. Follow your surgeon's instructions
Your surgeon will give you individual aftercare advice and it is very important to follow it so that the healing and the final result are as good as possible. It may cover hygiene routines, medication or how to manage any discomfort.
2. Keep your head raised
Keeping your head in a raised position, especially during the first few days, reduces swelling and improves circulation. Extra pillows or a reclining chair can make it easier to keep your head in the right position.
3. Avoid strenuous activities
Physical exertion and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four weeks. This reduces the risk of complications and gives the body better conditions in which to heal.
4. Wear comfortable clothes
Choose loose-fitting garments that are not pulled over the head. Shirts with buttons or a zip are a good choice to avoid putting strain on the neck.
Swelling during the recovery
Swelling is a natural part of the healing process and is most noticeable during the first week. After that it gradually subsides. Most of the swelling disappears within two to four weeks, but some of it can linger for a few months. Compression garments and individually tailored advice from your surgeon help to manage it.

How long does the feeling of tightness in the neck last?
It is common for the neck to feel tight after a neck lift – this is because the skin and muscles have been adjusted and tightened. For many people this starts to ease after a couple of weeks, but mild tightness can remain for a few months while the area continues to heal. Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon give you the chance to monitor progress and get answers to any questions during the healing.
