How long does swelling last after labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty swelling

How long can I expect to be swollen?

Swelling is at its most noticeable during the first 72 hours after the procedure. This is when the inflammatory processes are at their most active, which causes fluid to collect in the tissues.

For most people the worst of the swelling subsides within 4–6 weeks. Some swelling or unevenness can, however, remain for up to three months or longer. This is usually because the deeper tissues are still healing, even though the labia appear restored on the outside.

It is common for swelling to fluctuate during the healing process and depending on activity, fluid levels in the body, hormonal changes and heat. It is also normal to expect a temporary increase in swelling during menstruation.

Timeline for swelling after labiaplasty

Day by day

  • Days 1–3
This is the acute inflammatory phase. The area is often considerably swollen and may be bruised. The labia can feel tight or tender. Discomfort or a stinging sensation is common, caused both by the swelling and by the effect of the surgery on the nerves in the area. At this stage it is especially important to keep the area clean and cool.
  • Days 4–7
The swelling usually starts to go down now, although the area may still be visibly swollen and sensitive. Walking can feel uncomfortable, particularly in tight clothing. A small amount of clear fluid from the incision is normal and an expected part of healing.

Labiaplasty swelling

Week by week

  • Weeks 1–2
The swelling continues to go down and the bruising often fades, though at different rates from person to person. Unevenness is common and should not be read as the final result.
  • Weeks 3–4
Most people can return to lighter physical activity. The swelling is often mild and more localised. The contours of the area become clearer, but minor unevenness is still common.
  • Weeks 5–6
The bulk of the swelling has settled, although the tissue may feel firm or slightly numb. This is because the nerves are regenerating and the deeper layers are still healing. It is still too early to judge the final result.
  • After 6 weeks
Any remaining swelling is usually very slight and does not affect everyday life. Some people find that the swelling varies a little over the menstrual cycle and with physical exertion.

Tips for reducing swelling after surgery

  • Rinse with water: Use a spray bottle to clean the area gently without irritating it.
  • Rest: Avoid strenuous activity and make sure your body gets time to recover.
  • Abstain from sex: Avoid intercourse so that the tissues are not irritated.
  • No hair removal: Skip shaving and waxing until the area has healed completely.
  • Take pain relief: Follow your doctor's prescription to manage discomfort and reduce inflammation.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing: Choose airy garments to reduce pressure on the area.

Labiaplasty swelling

Swelling cannot be avoided entirely after a labiaplasty, but there are ways to reduce both how much there is and how long it lingers.

  • Use a cold compress (first 48 hours)
Cooling for short periods can help the blood vessels contract and so reduce the swelling. Always wrap the ice in a cloth! It is important never to place ice directly on the skin, as this can cause cold burns.
  • Raise your pelvis when resting
Lying with your pelvis slightly raised eases the flow of lymphatic fluid and reduces fluid build-up.
  • Gentle hygiene
Clean with lukewarm water from a hand-held spray bottle after going to the toilet. Avoid soap and wet wipes.
  • Avoid heat and friction
Saunas, hot baths and tight underwear can increase blood flow and make the swelling worse. Choose airy, soft garments instead.
  • Limit physical activity
Avoid standing or walking for long periods and avoid carrying anything heavy during the first two weeks. Even light household chores can affect healing negatively if they are started too soon.
  • Abstain from sex
Both penetrative sex after labiaplasty and other stimulation can disturb healing and cause bleeding or increased swelling. Wait until your surgeon gives you the go-ahead, which usually comes after 6–8 weeks.
  • Avoid hair removal
Wait with all types of hair removal in the genital area until the skin has fully recovered.

If the swelling suddenly gets worse, appears on one side only, or comes with redness, fever or foul-smelling discharge, you should contact the clinic to rule out infection or bleeding.

When is the final result visible?

The final result after a labiaplasty is usually visible after 3-6 months. By then the swelling has generally settled and the tissues have found their new structure.

The biggest changes happen during the first six weeks, but it can take several months before the area regains its natural sensation, colour and softness. Minor unevenness usually evens out as healing continues.
