How to choose a skin booster provider
Board certification is the starting point. The details below are worth weighing carefully when you're choosing the provider who's right for your goals.
Here's what to look for before you decide:
A good provider is clear about what skin boosters can and can't do.
They improve hydration and skin quality, not volume or shape. If your concern is hollowing or loose skin, an honest provider will say so and explain the alternatives.
Ask which product and why.
Products work differently and follow different schedules. You should know the product's name, how it is placed, and how many sessions are planned before you start.
The injector should be medically qualified.
In Sweden, only licensed doctors, dentists and nurses may give cosmetic injections, and the clinic must be registered with the health and social care inspectorate (IVO). Elsewhere, ask about the injector's training.
Clean technique and clear aftercare matter.
Infection is uncommon but possible with any injection. A careful clinic uses sterile technique and tells you which signs mean you should call.
Expect a realistic timeline.
Results are subtle, build over weeks and last around six months. A provider who promises dramatic or permanent change is overselling.
Before your consultation, prepare this question
“Which product do you recommend for my skin, and what result is realistic?”
A good provider names the product, explains the course and maintenance, and sets realistic expectations about a subtle, temporary improvement.

About skin boosters
What are skin boosters?
Skin boosters are injectable treatments that improve the quality of the skin itself: hydration, smoothness, firmness and glow. Most are based on hyaluronic acid, the water-binding molecule found naturally in skin. Unlike dermal fillers, they are not designed to add volume or change the shape of the face.
Products differ in how they work. Profhilo uses a high concentration of hyaluronic acid that spreads under the skin from a small number of injection points and is described as stimulating collagen and elastin. SKINVIVE by Juvéderm places tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid just beneath the surface to smooth and hydrate, and in the US it is approved by the FDA to improve the smoothness of the cheeks.
What skin boosters treat
Skin boosters are used to improve:
- Hydration and glow in dry or dull-looking skin
- Smoothness and fine lines
- Firmness and elasticity
- Skin quality on the neck, décolletage and hands as well as the face
What skin boosters cannot do
Skin boosters improve skin quality. They do not:
- Add noticeable volume or change your contours, which is what fillers do.
- Lift significantly loose skin, which needs surgery.
- Relax expression lines, which is what anti-wrinkle injections do.
- Last permanently, so maintenance is needed to keep the effect.
What to expect
Consultation. Your injector looks at your skin, asks what bothers you, and recommends a product and a plan for the areas you want treated. In Sweden, the law requires spoken and written information about the treatment and a reflection period of at least two days before it can go ahead.
Preparation. Avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning supplements beforehand reduces bruising. A numbing cream can be applied if you want one.
Injection. The product is placed with a fine needle, either at a few set points from which it spreads (as with Profhilo) or as many tiny droplets just under the surface (as with SKINVIVE). Some products contain lidocaine for comfort. A SKINVIVE session takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
Course. Profhilo is usually given as two sessions about four weeks apart. SKINVIVE is typically a single session.
Small bumps at the injection points, mild redness or swelling are common and usually settle within one to three days. Bruising can occur. Most people go straight back to work and normal activities.
- Avoid intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours
- Contact the clinic if redness, warmth or pain increases, or you develop a fever
Results and duration
Some people notice a fresher look within days. Improvement in texture and firmness builds over the following weeks, and with Profhilo the full result is usually seen after the second session.
Results are temporary, typically around six months. In the study behind the FDA's approval of SKINVIVE, the effect lasted at least six months. Many people choose a maintenance session about every six months.
Risks and side effects
Skin boosters are generally well tolerated. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived:
- Redness, swelling and bruising, common at the injection sites and usually settling within a few days.
- Small bumps, raised points where the product was placed, which typically even out within 24 to 72 hours.
- Infection, uncommon, but possible with any injection. Sterile technique and good aftercare reduce the risk.
- Allergic reaction, rare. Itching or a rash can occur and is usually temporary. Tell your injector about any allergies.
- Vascular occlusion, rare but serious with any injected filler, when product blocks a blood vessel. It needs urgent treatment.
When to seek medical attention
Seek care promptly if you notice:
- Pale or white patches of skin, or a dusky, mottled color
- Pain that is severe or getting worse rather than settling
- Any change in your vision, which needs emergency care straight away
- Spreading redness, warmth or a fever
Contact the clinic that treated you straight away, or seek emergency care, if you notice any of these.

Talk to us →How are skin boosters different from fillers?
Fillers add volume to restore or change shape. Skin boosters are spread through or just under the skin to improve hydration, smoothness and firmness, without changing your features.
How many sessions do I need?
It depends on the product. Profhilo is usually two sessions about four weeks apart. SKINVIVE is typically a single session. Maintenance is usually about every six months.
How long do results last?
Typically around six months, depending on the product, your skin and your lifestyle.
When will I see a difference?
Some people notice a fresher look within days, with firmness and texture improving over the following weeks.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel a quick pinch at each injection point. A numbing cream can be applied, and some products contain lidocaine.
Which areas can be treated?
Most commonly the face, and also the neck, décolletage and hands. In the US, SKINVIVE is approved for the cheeks.
Is there any downtime?
Very little. Small bumps, redness or swelling usually settle within a few days, and most people return to normal activities straight away. Avoid intense exercise for a day or two.
Can skin boosters be combined with other treatments?
Yes, practices commonly combine them with fillers, microneedling and other skin treatments. Your injector can advise on the order and timing.
