Chin and neck liposuction: Compare practices from our network
Chin and neck liposuction removes stubborn fat under the chin and along the jawline. It works best where the skin is still firm enough to settle to the new contour.

How to choose a surgeon for chin and neck liposuction
Board certification is the starting point. The details below are worth weighing carefully when you're choosing the surgeon who's right for your goals.
Here's what to look for before you decide:
A good surgeon checks your skin before your fat.
Liposuction only removes fat. If your skin has lost elasticity, or you have visible neck bands, a surgeon who tells you that liposuction alone will not give the result you want is being straight with you.
They should explain every option, not just one.
Fat-dissolving injections, fat freezing, liposuction, liposuction with skin tightening and a neck lift sit on a spectrum. Ask why one is recommended for you, and what the others would and would not achieve.
Ask exactly what skin tightening adds.
Energy devices such as Renuvion can help mild laxity after liposuction, with results building over months. Ask whether it is needed in your case, what it adds to recovery, and how the surgeon manages the risk of burns.
Transparency about your plan and expectations is non-negotiable.
Your surgeon should be comfortable documenting the areas treated, whether skin tightening is included, where the incisions will be, and what recovery looks like, and sharing that with you in writing.
Before your consultation, prepare this question
“Is my concern fat, loose skin or neck bands, and will liposuction alone address it?”
A surgeon who separates these clearly, and tells you when you need more or less than liposuction, is planning your result rather than selling a procedure.

About chin and neck liposuction
What is chin and neck liposuction?
Chin and neck liposuction, also called submental liposuction, removes localized fat from under the chin, along the jawline and from the upper neck. Through tiny incisions hidden in natural creases, a thin cannula loosens and suctions out the fat, sharpening the angle between the chin and the neck.
Fat under the chin often comes down to genetics rather than weight, which is why it can persist in people who are otherwise slim.
Liposuction removes fat, not loose skin or neck muscle bands. Where skin has lost its elasticity, removing fat alone can make looseness more visible, and a neck lift or skin tightening may be the better answer.
Liposuction with skin tightening
Some practices combine chin and neck liposuction with Renuvion, which uses helium plasma and radiofrequency energy beneath the skin to help it contract. It is FDA-cleared for improving the appearance of loose skin in the neck and under the chin, and firming can continue for up to a year. It suits mild laxity; significant loose skin or neck bands usually need a neck lift.
Surgical and non-surgical options
Fullness under the chin can be treated in several ways, depending on how much fat there is and how firm the skin is:
- Fat-dissolving injections or fat freezing, for modest fullness, over several sessions.
- Chin and neck liposuction, in one procedure where skin quality is good.
- Liposuction with skin tightening, for fat with mild laxity.
- Neck lift, where loose skin or neck bands are the main concern.
Are you a candidate?
Chin and neck liposuction generally suits healthy people near a stable weight who have fullness under the chin or along the jaw that has not responded to diet and exercise, and whose skin still has good elasticity.
It may be less suitable if you:
- Have significant loose neck skin or visible vertical neck bands
- Are seeking weight loss rather than contouring
- Are at an unstable weight or still losing weight
- Have a medical condition that impairs healing, or smoke and cannot stop
The treatment, step by step
Consultation. Your surgeon assesses the fat under your chin, the elasticity of your skin, any neck bands and the shape of your jaw and chin, then advises whether liposuction alone, liposuction with skin tightening, or a neck lift fits your anatomy.
Preparations. You may need to adjust medications that affect bleeding, stop smoking, and arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used.
Anesthesia. A tumescent solution containing local anesthetic is infused into the area, with optional sedation. Most patients go home the same day.
Incisions. Tiny incisions are placed in natural creases, typically under the chin.
Fat removal. A slim cannula loosens and suctions out fat beneath the chin, along the jawline and in the upper neck, sculpting a smoother transition from face to neck. The procedure typically takes about an hour.
Skin tightening, if planned. Some surgeons follow liposuction with an energy-based device beneath the skin, such as Renuvion, to help mild laxity contract.
Closing. The small incisions are closed or left to heal, and a supportive compression garment may be applied around the chin and neck.
Recovery and aftercare
Swelling, bruising and tightness under the chin are normal, and usually ease noticeably within one to two weeks. Discomfort is generally mild and managed with pain relief.
- Keep your head elevated while sleeping to help swelling settle
- Wear any compression garment as instructed
- Walk gently from the first day, but avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks
- Protect the small incisions from the sun
- Attend all follow-up appointments
Many people return to desk work within three to five days. Subtle swelling can persist for several weeks.
Risks and side effects
Chin and neck liposuction is generally safe, but like any surgical procedure it carries risks:
- Swelling and bruising, common and temporary, easing over one to two weeks, with subtle swelling for several weeks.
- Contour irregularity or asymmetry, uneven areas or small dents under the skin, occasionally needing correction.
- Changes in sensation, numbness or altered feeling under the chin, usually temporary.
- Loose skin, more visible looseness where skin elasticity was already reduced.
- Device-related risks, where energy-based tightening is added: burns, fluid build-up and temporary numbness, which are uncommon.
When to seek medical attention
- Rapidly increasing swelling under the chin or in the neck
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Fever, or increasing redness, warmth or discharge from an incision
- Severe or increasing pain
Contact your surgeon's practice directly, or seek emergency care, if you experience any of the above.
Common questions
Chin and neck liposuction questions, answered.
If your question isn't here, ask us directly. A real person answers, and we won't push you toward anything.
Talk to us →Is chin liposuction the same as a neck lift?
No. Liposuction removes fat through tiny incisions; a neck lift removes and redrapes loose skin and can tighten the neck muscle. Where the skin is loose, liposuction alone may not be enough.
Will I be awake?
Usually, under local anesthesia, often with oral or IV sedation for comfort. You should not feel pain, and you go home the same day.
Where are the scars?
The incisions are tiny and placed in natural creases, typically under the chin. They usually fade to be hard to notice.
Will the fat come back?
The fat cells removed do not return. Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain, so keeping a stable weight helps preserve the result.
Will my skin tighten afterward?
Skin with good elasticity usually settles to the new contour. Where it is looser, some surgeons add a skin-tightening device such as Renuvion; significant laxity usually needs a neck lift.
Will I need more than one procedure?
Usually not. Most people have a long-lasting improvement from a single procedure, though aging and weight change continue, and some later choose skin tightening or fillers.
What are the main risks?
Swelling and bruising, contour irregularities, asymmetry, changes in sensation, visible loose skin, and less commonly bleeding or infection. Added skin tightening carries a small risk of burns.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Yes. It is often combined with a facelift, neck lift, eyelid surgery or fillers, or with skin tightening in the same session.
