How to choose a laser hair removal provider

Board certification is the starting point. The details below are worth weighing carefully when you're choosing the provider who's right for your goals.

Here's what to look for before you decide:

01

The device must match your skin tone.

Different wavelengths suit different skin types, and using the wrong one raises the risk of burns and pigment change, particularly in deeper skin tones. A provider who assesses your Fitzpatrick skin type and names the appropriate device is working safely.

02

A patch test before the first full session is standard practice.

Testing a small area lets the provider check your skin's response before treating a whole region. A practice that skips this to save an appointment is cutting the wrong corner.

03

A good provider explains that this is reduction, not removal.

Most people achieve substantial, long-lasting reduction rather than complete permanent removal, and maintenance sessions are often needed. A provider who says so upfront is setting expectations you can trust.

04

Hair colour affects what is achievable.

The laser targets pigment, so grey, white, and very fine blonde hair respond poorly or not at all. A provider who tells you this before selling a course is being honest with you.

05

Ask who operates the device and what their training is.

Results and safety depend heavily on the operator's assessment and settings. Ask about their qualification, their training on that specific device, and how long they have been treating your skin type.

Before your consultation, prepare this question

“Which laser will you use for my skin type, and will you patch test first?”

Different wavelengths suit different skin tones. A provider who patch tests and can name the device for your skin type is working safely.

About the treatment

About laser hair removal

Laser hair removal directs light at the pigment in hair follicles, damaging them so they produce less hair. Because follicles cycle through growth phases, a course of sessions is needed to treat each area effectively.

Laser hair removal treatment overview
How it works

The laser emits light absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair. That energy converts to heat and damages the follicle, reducing its ability to produce hair. Only follicles in the active growth phase respond, which is why sessions are spaced weeks apart.

Because the treatment relies on pigment contrast between hair and skin, it works best on dark hair. Grey, white, and very fine blonde hair respond poorly.

What to expect from results

Realistic expectations matter here more than with most treatments:

  • Most people see substantial reduction rather than complete removal
  • A course of six to eight sessions is typical, spaced four to eight weeks apart
  • Areas differ, with coarse dark hair responding better than fine hair
  • Maintenance sessions are commonly needed over time
  • Hormonal changes can prompt new growth regardless of previous treatment
Skin tone and safety

Skin tone is the key safety variable. Older devices worked well only on light skin with dark hair; longer-wavelength lasers such as Nd:YAG allow safer treatment of deeper skin tones.

Using an inappropriate device or settings on deeper skin can cause burns, pigment loss, or darkening. A provider should assess your skin type, explain which device they will use, and patch test before a first full session.

Before your sessions

Consultation and patch test. Your provider assesses your skin type and hair colour, sets expectations, and tests a small area to check your response.

Preparation. Avoid sun exposure and self-tan beforehand. Shave the area rather than waxing or plucking, as the follicle needs to be present.

Treatment. Protective eyewear is worn. The handpiece is passed over the area with a cooling mechanism; most describe a snapping sensation. Sessions range from minutes to an hour by area.

Aftercare. Expect redness and mild swelling around the follicles for a day or so. Avoid sun, hot baths, saunas, and exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and use sunscreen on treated skin.

Course and review. Sessions repeat every four to eight weeks depending on area. Reduction becomes apparent progressively across the course.

Who it suits

Laser hair removal is suitable for most people, but results and safety vary. It is less suitable if you:

  • Have grey, white, or very fine blonde hair, which lacks the pigment the laser targets
  • Have recently had significant sun exposure or used self-tan
  • Are pregnant, as treatment is generally deferred
  • Take medication that increases light sensitivity
  • Have an active skin infection or condition in the area
  • Have a history of keloid scarring, which warrants caution
Risks and side effects

Side effects are usually mild and short-lived when the right device and settings are used:

  • Redness and swelling around the follicles, typically settling within a day or two.
  • Temporary discomfort, often described as a snapping or warm sensation.
  • Pigment changes, either lightening or darkening of the skin, more likely in deeper skin tones or with sun exposure.
  • Burns or blistering, uncommon, and usually the result of inappropriate device settings.
  • Paradoxical hair growth, rare, where treatment stimulates fine hair in an adjacent area.
  • Scarring, rare, and more likely if blistering is picked or infected.

Talk to us →

Is it permanent?

It produces long-lasting reduction rather than permanent removal for most people. Maintenance sessions are commonly needed, and hormonal changes can prompt new growth.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically six to eight, spaced four to eight weeks apart, though it varies by area and hair type. Coarse dark hair responds fastest.

Does it work on all skin tones?

With the right device, yes. Longer-wavelength lasers allow safer treatment of deeper skin tones. Using an inappropriate device raises the risk of burns and pigment change.

Does it work on grey or blonde hair?

Poorly or not at all. The laser targets pigment in the hair, so grey, white, and very fine blonde hair lack the target it needs.

Is it painful?

Most people describe a snapping or warm sensation rather than pain. Devices have cooling mechanisms, and sensitive areas are more uncomfortable than others.

Should I shave or wax before a session?

Shave. The follicle needs to be present for the laser to target it, so waxing and plucking should be avoided in the weeks before treatment.

Can I have it in summer or with a tan?

Recent sun exposure and self-tan raise the risk of pigment problems. Most providers advise avoiding sun before and after sessions and using sunscreen on treated skin.

Will I need a patch test?

You should. Testing a small area first lets the provider check your response and adjust settings before treating a whole region.

What is the aftercare?

Expect redness for a day or so. Avoid sun, hot baths, saunas, and exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and use sunscreen on treated areas.

Can I have it while pregnant?

Treatment is generally deferred during pregnancy. Tell your provider if you are pregnant or trying to conceive.
