How to choose a lip filler provider

Board certification is the starting point. The details below are worth weighing carefully when you're choosing the provider who's right for your goals.

Here's what to look for before you decide:

01

A safe injector keeps hyaluronidase on site and knows the protocol.

Vascular occlusion is the serious complication of lip filler, and it is time-critical. Hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic acid filler and should be available immediately. Ask directly. Hesitation is a warning sign.

02

The injector should be medically qualified.

In Sweden, only licensed doctors, dentists and nurses may give cosmetic injections, and the clinic must be registered with the health and social care inspectorate (IVO). Elsewhere, ask about the injector's qualifications and who is on hand if something goes wrong.

03

Proportion over volume.

A good injector looks at your lips in relation to your whole face and may suggest less filler than you expected. Natural-looking results usually come from building gradually rather than from a single large amount.

04

Ask which product goes into your lips.

Clinics should use approved fillers from reputable suppliers. Fillers bought online can be counterfeit or unapproved, which is why the FDA warns against it. You should know the product's name before it is injected.

05

Product, amount and placement should be documented.

You should know which filler was used, how much and where. That record matters if it ever needs dissolving, if you see a different injector, or if you want to build on the result later.

Before your consultation, prepare this question

“Which product will you use, how much do you suggest, and what happens if a blood vessel is blocked?”

A good injector names the product, starts conservatively, and keeps hyaluronidase on site with a clear emergency plan.

About the treatment

About lip augmentation

What is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation adds volume, shape or definition to the lips, most often with an injectable hyaluronic acid filler. It can also soften the fine vertical lines around the mouth that many people notice with age.

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, and the fillers made for lips are softer than those used to build up cheeks or a jawline. Because they are hyaluronic acid based, they can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if a problem arises or you don't like the result. Some practices also offer fat transfer to the lips, which lasts longer but involves a small procedure to collect the fat.

What lip filler treats

Lip filler is used to:

  • Add volume to thin lips or lips that have thinned with age
  • Define the lip border and Cupid's bow
  • Balance the upper and lower lip, or soften a mild asymmetry
  • Smooth fine vertical lines around the mouth
What lip filler cannot do

Lip filler adds volume and definition. It does not:

  • Last permanently, so keeping the result means repeat treatments.
  • Relax the muscles behind expression lines, which is what anti-wrinkle injections do.
  • Guarantee symmetry, since few lips are perfectly symmetrical to begin with.
What to expect

Consultation. Your injector looks at your lips in proportion to the rest of your face, asks what you would like to change, checks your medical history and allergies, and photographs your starting point. In Sweden, the law requires spoken and written information about the treatment and a reflection period of at least two days before it can go ahead.

Preparation. Avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning supplements beforehand reduces bruising. Mention any previous lip filler, including where it was done and which product was used.

Numbing. A numbing cream is applied, and most lip fillers contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic. Lips are sensitive, so some clinics also use a quick local anesthetic on the inside of the lip.

Injection. Small amounts of filler are placed with a fine needle or a blunt cannula, checking shape and symmetry along the way. The injecting usually takes 15 to 30 minutes; allow up to an hour at the clinic in total.

Lips often feel firm, swollen or tender at first. Swelling usually peaks in the first 48 hours and settles within about a week; a cold pack and sleeping with your head raised can help. Bruising is common and temporary. Most people go back to work and normal activities straight away.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
  • Wait about 24 hours before wearing lipstick or gloss
  • Avoid saunas, sunbathing and extreme cold until swelling and redness have gone
  • Don't massage or press your lips unless your injector asks you to

Review. A follow-up at around two weeks, once swelling has settled, is the fair point to judge the result and make small adjustments.

Results and duration

Results are visible straight away, but early swelling makes the lips look fuller than they will settle. Most people can judge the result after one to two weeks.

Hyaluronic acid lip filler is temporary. The practices in our network quote about six to twelve months, depending on the product, the amount used and the person. Lips move all day, so filler there tends not to last as long as in the cheeks or jaw. Keeping the result means repeat treatments, and filler placed conservatively should not permanently stretch the lips.

Risks and side effects

Most side effects are mild and short-lived, but lip filler carries one rare and serious risk that everyone should understand before treatment:

  • Swelling and bruising, common, peaking in the first two days and usually settling within about a week.
  • Lumps or unevenness, small lumps or asymmetry can occur. Hyaluronic acid filler can be adjusted or dissolved.
  • Migration, filler can move beyond the intended area, such as above the lip border.
  • Vascular occlusion, rare but serious, when filler blocks a blood vessel. It can damage the skin and, very rarely, affect vision, and needs treatment straight away, usually with hyaluronidase.
  • Infection, uncommon, and treated promptly by the clinic.
  • Delayed reactions, occasionally, swelling or firm lumps appear weeks or months later, sometimes after an illness, a vaccination or dental work.
  • Allergic reaction, rare. Tell your injector about any allergies, including to lidocaine.

When to seek medical attention

Seek care promptly if you notice:

  • Pale or white patches on the lips or nearby skin, or a dusky, mottled color
  • Pain that is severe or getting worse rather than settling
  • Any change in your vision, which needs emergency care straight away
  • Spreading redness, warmth or a fever

Contact the clinic that treated you straight away, or seek emergency care, if you notice any of these.

Talk to us →

How long does lip filler last?

Usually around six to twelve months with hyaluronic acid filler, depending on the product, the amount and how your body breaks it down. Lips move a lot, so filler there tends to fade sooner than in the cheeks.

Does it hurt?

Lips are one of the more sensitive areas, but numbing cream and the lidocaine in most lip fillers keep it tolerable for most people. Some clinics also numb the inside of the lip.

How long will my lips be swollen?

Swelling usually peaks in the first 48 hours and settles within about a week. A cold pack and sleeping with your head raised can help. Judge the result at around two weeks.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can, using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It is used both to treat a blocked blood vessel and to reverse a result you are unhappy with. Fat transfer cannot be dissolved in the same way.

Will filler stretch my lips?

Filler placed conservatively should not permanently stretch the lips. A careful injector builds gradually, reviews you before adding more, and is willing to say when you have had enough.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. In Sweden, cosmetic injections are only allowed from 18, and the clinic has to check your age. In the United States, the FDA has approved dermal fillers for adults aged 22 and over.

When can I exercise or wear lipstick?

Most clinics suggest avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours and waiting about 24 hours before wearing lipstick or gloss. Walking and everyday activity are fine straight away.

What is the most serious risk?

Vascular occlusion, when filler blocks a blood vessel. It is rare but time-critical. Ask whether your injector keeps hyaluronidase on site and has a clear emergency plan.

Is there a longer-lasting option?

Some practices offer fat transfer, using your own fat taken from another area. It can last much longer than filler, but it involves a small procedure, takes longer to heal, and is harder to adjust.
